What the lint trap does
The lint trap is a fine screen that catches the big, fluffy lint coming off your clothes. Clean it after every load and it does its job well: it keeps the largest fibers out of the vent line and keeps air flowing through the drum. Skipping it is the fastest way to clog a vent — a full trap forces lint straight past it.
What the lint trap cannot do
The trap is not a perfect filter. Fine lint, pet hair, and fibers slip through and around it on every load. Over months, that escaping lint coats the inside of the vent line, building up layer by layer. No amount of trap cleaning removes it — it is past the trap, inside your walls. This is also why "I clean the trap every time" is not a reason to skip vent cleaning.
What vent cleaning does
Professional vent cleaning removes the lint the trap missed: the packed layers inside the duct, the clumps at elbows and joints, the plug at the outside cap. We use rotary brushes and vacuums that reach the full length of the line — places no trap, vacuum hose, or DIY kit can properly clean.
The dryer sheet problem
Dryer sheets leave an invisible waxy film on the lint screen. Over time that film blocks airflow through the trap itself — hold the screen under running water; if water beads up instead of flowing through, the screen is coated. Scrub it with soap and a brush. A coated screen makes the dryer work harder even when it looks clean.
The simple routine
Every load: clean the lint trap. Every few months: check the screen for film and the outside cap for lint. Every year: professional vent cleaning. That is the whole system — cheap, simple, and it keeps the fire risk where it belongs: near zero. Call (301) 679-9193 or send the form for a free estimate — no pressure, no obligation.
