Birds love dryer vents — that is the problem

A dryer vent cap is warm, sheltered, and high up: perfect nesting real estate. In Central Florida, birds can build a full nest inside a vent cap in a matter of weeks during nesting season. A nest blocks airflow almost completely — the dryer overheats, dry times double, and you have a wad of dry nesting material sitting in a stream of hot air. We pull nests out of vents every spring.

What a good cap and guard do

The outside cap is the vent's front door. A proper cap keeps rain out, closes against drafts when the dryer is off, and — with a bird guard — blocks birds and rodents while letting air escape. The key detail: the guard's openings must be large enough that lint passes through instead of collecting on the screen. Guards with mesh that is too fine clog with lint and create the very blockage they were meant to prevent.

What we install

We replace broken, painted-shut, or missing caps with proper louvered or hood-style caps, and we fit bird guards sized for dryer vents — not generic screens. For roof caps, we install guards that keep birds out while handling Florida's heavy rain. Every install gets an airflow test to confirm the guard is not restricting the vent.

Signs you need this

Chirping or scratching sounds near the vent. Nesting material visible at the cap. The cap flaps are stuck open or missing. The dryer suddenly runs much longer in spring. Any of these means something is living in — or blocking — your vent exit. Call (301) 679-9193 or send the form for a free estimate — no pressure, no obligation.

Our Process: How It Works

Step 1 — Free estimate. We check your current cap: its condition, whether the flaps work, and whether anything is living in it.

Step 2 — Clearing. We remove any nests, lint, or debris from the cap and the last few feet of the vent.

Step 3 — Installation. We fit the new cap or guard, secured properly against wind and weather, with openings sized for dryer airflow.

Step 4 — Airflow verification. We run the dryer and confirm strong airflow through the new cap — a guard must never restrict the vent.

Cap styles, explained simply

Louvered caps have flaps that open when the dryer runs and close when it stops — the most common and usually the best choice. Hood caps use a fixed cover that deflects rain while staying open; simple and reliable. Roof caps sit on top of vertical runs with a weather hood; they need bird guards more than any other type. What you want to avoid: caps with fine mesh screens not made for dryers (they clog with lint), caps painted shut by a careless painter, and cheap plastic caps that crack in the Florida sun within a couple of years. We install metal caps built for this climate.

Timing it with bird season

In Central Florida, nesting season runs roughly spring through early summer. The smart move is installing guards in late winter, before birds start house-hunting. If you are reading this in April and hear chirping in the vent, do not wait — a nest grows fast, and once eggs are involved, removal gets complicated by wildlife rules. Call us and we will handle it correctly: nest removed, guard installed, problem solved before it repeats next year. After installation, glance at the cap each spring; a good guard lasts for years with zero attention.

More than birds: what else caps keep out

Bird guards earn their name, but they do more. They block rodents looking for attic access, keep wind-driven rain from entering the vent, reduce drafts when the dryer is off, and stop the cap from becoming an insect highway. A proper cap is a small piece of hardware doing several quiet jobs — which is exactly why a broken or missing one deserves prompt replacement.

Replace the cap or just add a guard?

If your cap is in good shape — flaps move freely, no cracks, solid mounting — adding a bird guard to the existing cap is all you need. If the cap is cracked, sun-brittled, painted shut, or missing flaps, replace the whole unit; a guard on a broken cap is lipstick on a pig. During the free estimate we assess what you have and recommend the minimal fix that actually solves the problem. We would rather sell you a $30 guard than a $150 cap replacement — unless the cap genuinely needs replacing.

The painted-shut epidemic

One of the most common things we find: a perfectly good vent cap painted completely shut during an exterior repaint. The flaps cannot open, airflow drops to near zero, and the dryer slowly suffocates — all because a painter did not mask the vent. If your home was recently painted and the dryer got worse afterward, check the cap before anything else. We free painted-shut caps and install guards so it does not happen again.

Guards for every exit type

Wall caps, roof caps, and gable-end caps each need a guard designed for that mounting. Roof caps need guards that handle weather and can be serviced from the roof. Wall caps need guards that do not trap lint against the siding. We stock the right guard for each type and install it so it can be removed for future cleanings — because a guard that cannot come off is a guard that becomes a permanent lint trap.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a bird guard clog with lint?

Not if it is the right guard. Dryer vent guards use wider openings than window screen so lint passes through. We install guards made for this job.

Can you remove a nest that is already there?

Yes — we remove nests and debris from caps as part of the service, then install the guard so it does not happen again.

Do you handle roof caps?

Yes. Roof vent caps are the most common bird entry point in Orlando homes, and we service them regularly.
