1. Clothes take two cycles to dry

This is the classic sign. The dryer runs its full cycle, the clothes are still damp, so you run it again. The heating element is fine — the hot, wet air just cannot escape through a clogged vent, so moisture stays in the drum. If this started gradually and keeps getting worse, the vent is filling with lint.

2. The top of the dryer is very hot

A working dryer gets warm. A dryer with a blocked vent gets hot — sometimes too hot to touch comfortably on top. That heat has nowhere to go, so it builds up inside the machine. This is also the most dangerous sign on this list: trapped heat plus packed lint is the fire combination.

3. The laundry room feels damp or smells musty

Moisture that cannot exit through the vent leaks back into the room. Paint peels, the air feels heavy, and a musty smell settles in. Check behind the dryer too — a disconnected vent hose blows that damp air straight into the wall cavity.

4. You see lint around the outside vent

Walk outside and look at the vent cap. Lint stuck to the cap, the siding, or the ground below means lint is pushing through but not clearing — the line behind it is packed. If the cap flaps do not open when the dryer runs, airflow is blocked.

5. The dryer shuts off before clothes are dry

Modern dryers have thermal cutoffs that kill the heat when the machine overheats. If your dryer stops mid-cycle and restarts later, it is probably overheating from a blocked vent — the safety switch is doing its job, but the underlying problem is still there.

6. It has been more than a year since a cleaning

Vents do not stay clean on their own. If you cannot remember the last cleaning — or there never was one — assume it needs it. Most household vents reach the risk zone within a year of normal use.

7. Burning smell when the dryer runs

Stop the dryer and call a professional. A burning smell means lint is getting hot enough to scorch, and the next step after scorching is ignition. Do not run the dryer again until the vent is inspected. This one is urgent.

If you recognized your dryer in two or more of these, do not wait. Call (301) 679-9193 or send the form for a free estimate — no pressure, no obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a clogged vent really start a fire?

Yes. Lint is extremely flammable and a clogged vent traps the dryer's heat around it. Fire officials list failure to clean as the leading cause of home dryer fires.

My dryer is new. Can the vent still be clogged?

Absolutely — the clog is in the vent line inside your wall, not the machine. A brand-new dryer on an old clogged vent will still take two cycles.
